Keratoprosthesis or Not
Indications and Contraindications of
Keratoprosthesis and Reconstruction
New Surgical and Engineering Approaches
One major question that we frequently face in
ocular surface reconstruction is whether we need to perform
keratoprosthesis or not. If so, what will be the indications and
contraindications. Such a question will now be raised in the context
where new surgical reconstructive procedures are available. To
determine when and how keratoprosthesis or ocular surface
reconstruction should be performed, we thus propose to have a joint
meeting between International Ocular Surface Society (as the
6th Annual Meeting) and KPro Study Group (as the 4th
Annual Meeting).
The meeting will be held at Marriott Marina (1881
SE 17th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (Phone: 800 433
2254 and 954 463 4000, Fax: 954 527 6701; www.marriott.com),
starting from 8:00 AM of May 4 (Friday) immediately following
the 2001 ARVO meeting and ending on noon of May 5 or
later depending on the submission of papers or posters.
Fees: The meeting is
free for the registered members of IOSS. For non-members, the
registration fee for the meeting is US$ 120, to be payable to
International Ocular Surface Society. Online registration can be
done by going to website www.ioss.org or a
check in US$ 120 can also be sent to International Ocular Surface
Society, 8780 SW 92 Street, Suite 203, Miami, FL 33176, USA. Tel:
305-274-1299, Fax: 305-274-1297.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference participants
should be able to have a good understanding of the published and new
knowledge concerning the clinical indications and contraindications
for keratoprosthesis versus ocular surface reconstruction.
Style of Presentation:
n Brief
summary of published data and elaborate presentation of unpublished
data
n Conclusion
of each presentation by raising a specific issue for group
discussion
n Emphasis
of equal time spent on speaker’s presentation and on group
discussion
Subjects to Be Covered:
Basic concepts to govern ocular surface health
and success of ocular surface reconstruction
Clinical parameters (indications) and results
for keratoprosthesis
Clinical parameters (indications) and results
for ocular surface reconstruction
Clinical parameters (contraindications) against
keratoprosthesis
Clinical parameters (contraindications) against
ocular surface reconstruction
New surgical and engineering approaches to
overcome
Severe sicca
Severe neurotrophic state
Severe squamous metatplasia (keratinization)
Lack of donor tissue
Call for Abstract:
We welcome members of IOSS and KPro or other
non-members to submit abstracts (see Abstract Form). The selection
criteria are based on the "subjects to be covered" (see
above).
Also see Web site www.ioss.org
for more information about the meeting including how to become a
member of IOSS, registration and submission of abstract for this
meeting.
