Philipp Steven, MD, PhD

Dr. Philipp Steven, is a clinician-scientist, who graduated from Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany and received his clinical training at the Department of Ophthalmology of University of Luebeck in Germany (Chairman Prof. Horst Laqua). During this time he joined the Mucosal Immunology Group (Prof. Andreas Gebert) for 3 years before he relocated to the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Cologne (Chairman Prof. Claus Cursiefen). He underwent several research sabbaticals e.g. at the Centenary Institute (B. Fazekas de St. Groth), University of Sydney Australia, the Inflammation Research Program (M.E. Stern) at Allergan, Irvine, CA and the Niederkorn Lab (J.Y. Niederkorn) at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. Currently Philipp Steven is adjunct Professor and Head of the Division for Dry-eye and ocular GvHD (Visiting Professor Dr. Michael E. Stern), head of the clinical trials center and head of the Ocular Surface Group at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Cologne with a further affiliation at the Eye Clinic Zurich West, in Switzerland. Furthermore he is PI in the DFG Research Area FOR2240 and the EU-funded project IT-DED3. His research group focusses on the understanding of conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue, its relevance for dry-eye disease and ocular allergy, the development and testing of novel anti-inflammatory drugs and novel non-invasive imaging methods for detecting and quantifying ocular surface inflammation.
